ATLANTIC — Senior Grace Stewart narrowly missed a second trip to the State Cross Country Meet by finishing 18th overall in a Class 3A State Qualifier Thursday.

Stewart, who ran in the state meet as a sophomore, finished three spots — and less than 20 seconds — away from a senior-year trip to Fort Dodge. She was far and away the highest finisher for either Perry team, as the Jayettes finished 12th in the 13-team field with 317 points.

The top three teams in both the boys and girls races advanced to the state meet, with the top 15 finishers advancing for individual honors.

Ballard won the 88-harrier girls race with 65 points, with Glenwood second at 78 and Denison-Schleswig third at 106. D-S junior Raegan Anderson won the meet in 19 minutes, 41.92 seconds, with Carlisle junior Megan Sievers (20:01.15) second and Ballard sophomore Ellie Twedt (20:09.28) third.

ADM freshman Nate Mueller was the champion in 16:32.5, with junior Carter Logue (17:01.15) and sophomore Kolby Fritz (17:02.96) — both of Carlisle — placing second and third, respectively.

Stewart 21:22.22 time led the Perry girls by a wide margin, with sophomore Molly Lutmer second for the team by finishing 70th in 27:06.37. Senior Julissa Calderon (74th, 27:40.65), freshman Cris Gomez (75th, 27:48.21) and junior Kat Munoz (80th, 29:32.9) also scored for the Jayettes.

Angela Hernandez (83rd, 29:35.12) and Hannah Peterson (84th, 30:32.27) completed the varsity seven.

The first Bluejay to finish crossed 53rd, with the 55th and 58th places also taken by Jays. Senior Zachary Thompson (19:33.75) and juniors Mario Cruz (19:34.93) and Eduardo Sanchez (19:47.41) were the top trio for Perry, with senior Zach Stewart 81st in 21:13.4 and senior Eli Noble 82nd in 21:18.87.
