Perry cross country teams compete at Ballard Invite

HUXLEY — The Perry boys and girls cross country programs, from grade seven through the seniors, were all in action Monday at the Ballard Invitational.

Both the Bluejays and Jayettes struggled in the team standings, with boys varsity 11th of 11 teams and the Jay junior varsity 19th of 20 while the Jayette varsity was 10th of 11 and the Jayette JV 13th of 13.

DC-G won the boys varsity team competition with 27 points, with Pella second at 57 and Carlisle third at 84 while Perry totalled 299 points.

Zach Thompson led the Bluejays by placing 44th in 19 minutes, 54 seconds, with Zach Stewart 56th in 21:09. Mario Cruz (61st, 21:17), Dane McCarty (68th, 21:59) and Aaron Lockwood (70th, 22:50) also placing. Luis Guzman (22:51) and Hayden McFarland (23:26) also ran for the varsity.

Alex Thompson and Tyler Broneman of DC-G were 1-2 in the race in 16:58 and 17:06, respectively, with Blaise Winegardner of Pella third in 17:11. Megan Sievers of Carlisle won the girls varsity race in 19:55, with Pella’s Tess Roorda second in 20:40 while Ellie Twedt of Ballard was third in 20:46.

Pella’s 31 points won the team battle for the varsity girls, with Ballard (59) second and DC-G (65) third. Perry finished with 247 points.

Grace Stewart (22nd, 23:04) and Molly Lutmer (47th, 25:18) led the way for Perry, with Joselyn Carrillo (53rd, 26:14), Hannah Peterson (60th, 27:13) and Julissa Calderon (28:20) also scoring. Darian McCord (28:40) and Alejandra Rivera (29:33) did not have their placings used for the varsity score.

Gilbert (26) and DC-G (29) dominated the boys JV race, with Perry scoring 586 points.

Gabe Ridnour (23:37), Ben Stika (23:45), Beau Nelson (23:46), Jacob Prombo (24:23) and Gerardo Gonzalez (24:47) placed for Perry, with Miguel Gonzalez (26:12) and Chase Archer (26:36) also running the course.

Pella (40) and Gilbert (43) led the girls JV standings, with Perry posting a score of 368.

Scoring for Perry were McKinley Thompson (28:46), Sophie Prombo (29:49), Angela Hernandez (30:09), Kyla Devilbiss (31:44) and Kat Munoz (32:22) with Taylor Eppert (33:38) and Andrea Cortez (34:12) also running.

Neither the Bluejay or Jayette middle school teams had the necessary five harriers required to post a team score.

Tyler Devilbiss (14:17), Andrew Galindo (18:04) and Kyle Lockwood (18:19) competed for the Perry boys, with the girls represented by Ashley Macias (19:09), Araceli Chavez (21:44) and Amy McNamara (23:37).

Perry is off until paying a Sept. 20 visit to the Newton Invitational.
