Perry cross country teams run at Newton Invitational

NEWTON — The six cross country teams from Perry were all in competition Tuesday at the Cardinal Invitational.

Grinnell won the boys varsity meet with 43 points, with Des Moines Roosevelt second at 52 and Ankeny third at 56. Perry was eighth in the nine-team field with 253 points.

Grinnell’s Jackson Schulte won the race in 17 minutes and 3 seconds, with Roosevelt’s Abdisalan Omar second in 17:23 while Grinnell’s Trenton O’Halloran was third in 17:30.

Dawit Adum (37th, 19:40) was the first Perry harrier to finish, with Morgan Holmstrom (45th, 20:23), Emilio Gonzalez (56th, 22:47), Jacob Prombo (57th, 22:48) and Mario Cruz (58th, 23:11) also scoring. Gerardo Gonzalez (23:20) and Kiza Ndume (24:46) also ran for Perry, who posted an average time of 21:46.

Sierra Mitchell of Southeast Polk won the girls varsity race in 20:05, with Oskaloosa’s Sienna DeJong second in 20:31 and Ankeny’s Alex Robran third in 20:49.

Ankeny’s 39 points won the team title, with SE Polk (61) and Grinnell (88) rounding out the top three. Perry was eighth in the eight-team field with 230 points.

Grace Stewart was 28th for the Jayettes in 22:55, with Julissa Calderon (28:48), Jacky Casteneda (28:49), McKinley Thompson (28:56) and Alejandra Rivera (30:05) placing 49-50-51-52. Darian McCord (30:13) also ran for Perry, who had an average time of 27:55.

DC-G (29), Ankeny (35) and Roosevelt (94) were the top three boys junior varsity teams, with Perry seventh of nine at 222 in an average time of 24:34.

Bradley Godwin (22:21), Fernando Catalan (23:30), Miguel Gonzalez (25:24), Elmer Garcia (25:40) and Aaron Lockwood (25:55) crossed 35-40-48-49 and 50th respectively, to account for the Perry score. Luke Pfau (27:16) and Ben Stika (28:17) were also on the course for the Jays JV.

Ankeny (51), Roosevelt (53) and SE Polk (66) claimed the top three girls JV team spots, with Perry unable to produce a team score as only four Jayettes were ran the circuit.

Kat Munoz (36:20), Alondra Avila (36:29), Elva Tavarez (40:41) and Andrea Cortes (42.05) were the Perry quartet competing Tuesday.

The boys middle school team win went to Waukee with 30 points, with Ames second at 47 and Roosevelt third at 92 while Perry was eighth in a 10-team field at 226 and with an average time of 15:15.

Luis Guzman (14:21), Chase Archer (15:00), Emanuel Cardenas (15:01), Hayden McFarland (15:02) and Andrew Gallindo (16:50) scored for Perry by placing, in order, 22-46-48-49 and 61st. Kyle Lockwood (17:25) and Collin Malmberg (18:28) also ran the two-mile course.

Waukee (29), Pella (49) and Ames (103) were the top three girls middle school teams, with Perry 10th of 11 at 279. The Jayettes had an average clocking of 19:03.

Molly Lutmer (36th, 16:15), Hannah Peterson (48th, 16:57), Alexis Martinez (63rd, 20:13), Sophia Prombo (65th, 20:18) and Angela Hernandez (67th, 21:28) scored for the Jayettes. Others running the course were Bree Martin (23:04) and Bailey Piper (24:36).

Perry will be back in action October 1 when they host the annual Leon Fox Invitational at the Perry Golf and Country Club. Races begin with middle school action at 4:15 p.m.
