Perry cross country teams run in RRC meet Monday

AMES — Gilbert hosted the Raccoon River Conference cross country meet Monday, which was run on the Iowa State University course.

Ballard won the girls varsity race with 23 points, with Winterset second at 91 and North Polk third at 92. ADM (94) was fourth, with Carlisle (109), Gilbert (115), Bondurant-Farrar (210), Perry (241), and Boone (270) following.

North Polk’s 22 points won the boys side, with Carlisle second at 44. ADM (83) placed third and Winterset (116) fourth, with Gilbert (143), B-F (150), Ballard (164), Boone (218), and Perry (291) completing the field. Carroll does not compete in cross country.

Ballard’s Paity Noe and Shewaye Johnson were 1-2 in the girls race in 17 minutes, 36 seconds and 18:16, respectively, with Carlisle’s Ainsley Erzen third in 18:38.

Perry was led by Jaylene Karolus, who crossed 24th overall in 21:11. Kennedy Tunink was 45th in 23:02 and Cris Gomez 55th in 26:08, with Misty Gomez (58th, 38:00), and Michelle Tobar (59th, 39:00) also competing.

Nate Mueller of ADM claimed boys honors in 15:23, with the North Polk trio of Zach Sporaa (16:15), Max Sporaa (16:26), and Will Ford (16:35) placing 2-3-4 to power the Comets.

Jayson Chavez (54th, 19:25), Gannon Meis (57th, 20:15) and Jeb Stewart (59th, 20:42) were the first three Bluejays to cross the line, with Johnathan Chavez (60th, 22:08), and Johnathan Munoz (61st, 22:09) also scoring. Bryce Anliker (62nd, 22:48) ran the circuit for Perry as well.

The Perry middle school girls were fourth in a nine-team field with 121 points. Gilbert (20), North Polk (107), and Ballard (120) were the top-three. Middle school races are two miles in length, with Ballard’s Annika Larson winning in 13:56.

Perry’s Julie Maylum, Tayrn Nehring, and Quin Mahler-Moreno were 19-20-21 in 15:26, 15:51, and 15:53, respectively. Olivia Christensen (30th, 16:13) and Mylah Meis (36th, 16:24) also scored, with Mercedes Ponce (55th, 18:31), and Maria Aguilar (59th, 19:30) rounding out the first seven.

Also running for the Jayettes were Denise Rivera (20:17), Fithawit Goitam (20:41), Litzy Ramirez (22:21), and Valentina Mion (23:59).

ADM (28) and Gilbert (99) were 1-2 in the middle school boys race, with Winterset (109) third and Perry (132) fourth among nine teams.

Perry standout Oscar Bellrand continued his outstanding season by winning in 12:07, beating ADM’s Toran Timmerman (12:09) to the line by two seconds.

A strong campaign from Owen Myers also continued, with the eighth-grader crossing ninth in 13:33. Seventh-grader Thad Stuart was 33rd in 15;04, with Aidan Carlson 35th in 15:24 and Christobal Turrado 54th in 16:53. Also scoring were Carols Ruiz (55th, 16:54), and seventh-grader Kyeo Augustine (57th, 17:20).

Renzo Saenz (17:46), Kenneth Martinez (18:47), and Isaac Ballard (19:50) ran for Perry as well.
