The Perry Elks Lodge 407 honored the U.S. flag Monday during the annual celebration of Flag Day at the Josh Davis Memorial Plaza in downtown Perry.

U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Josh Davis of Perry was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2010. Davis was a 2009 graduate of Perry High School. He was 19 when he died for the U.S. flag.

A crowd of about 12 looked on as eight Elks took part in the ceremony, which consisted of readings on the historical origins of the U.S. flag, the celebration of Flag Day and the meaning of our national symbol.

“It’s always great to be reminded of the history and significance of the American flag,” said Elk Travis Landgrebe, who was among the ceremonial eight. “Perry Lodge 407 officers did a terrific job honoring our flag.”

Following Flag Day in July will be Independence Day, with freedom tents arising in the Perry area to satisfy patriots’ love of colorful explosives.
