ROLAND — First, the Jayettes were blanked. Then, the Jayettes did the blanking.
Such was the turn of events for Perry Friday in the first of four games the Jayettes will play in their annual trip to the two-day Roland-Story Classic. Perry fell to Class 1A No. 1 AGWSR, 6-0, in their first game, then shut out Gilbert, 9-0, in their second contest. Saturday’s slate includes a 2:30 p.m. meeting with Nevada and a 6:30 p.m. contest with Roland-Story.
The Jayettes (6-13) quickly fell behind the top-ranked Cougars (15-2), who were on the board with a run in the top of the first before scoring twice in the second. Three runs in the top of the sixth capped the scoring, with the game ending via time limit after Perry’s at-bat in the sixth.
Emma Olejniczak threw four innings, allowing three runs on four hits, a walk and a hit batsman. She struck out seven, with Sidney Vancil fanning three in two frames of relief. Vancil was touched for three runs on a walk and three hits. AGWSR’s only earned run of the game was charged to Olejniczak.
Perry had five hits in the loss, with Rachel Kinney, Alyssa Kruger and Vancil recording a hit apiece while Olejniczak had two singles.
Perry had traveled to Gilbert (2-10) Tuesday and used a seven-run second inning to post a 7-0 win. In their second meeting in three days the Jayettes scored eight times in the third before tacking on a tally in the fifth for a 9-0 victory in six innings.
Olejniczak started the wild third with a double, with Kinney hitting a single. A Kruger double plated both runners, with a walk to Victoria Hegstrom and an error that allowed Katelyn Whelchel to reach safely loading the bases.
Vancil walked to force home Kruger, with Hegstrom scoring when Johanna Diw reached on an error. Olejniczak crunched her second double of the inning to drive in three runs, with a Kinney double scoring Olejniczak for an 8-0 Perry lead.
Diw scored in the fifth by reaching on an error and then racing home when Olejniczak hit her third double of the game, which accounted for four of Perry’s runs.
Kinney was 3-for-4 with a double, with Kruger adding a double while Brooke Huntington finished 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.
Olejniczak went five frames on the rubber. She allowed three hits, walked one batter, hit another and struck out 12. Vancil allowed one hit in an inning of relief.
