NEWTON — The field was large and the competition stiff Thursday at the Newton Coed Relays. Perry, minus several athletes who were playing soccer in Boone, finished 10th in a 12-team meet with 21 points.
Pella ran away with the team crown after amassing 162.5 points, with Cedar Rapids Prairie second at 117 and Oskaloosa third at 93. Rounding out the field were Indianola (70), ADM (61), Knoxville (60), Newton (52.5), Marshalltown (38.5), Bondurant-Farrar (36.5), Perry (21), Pella Christian (16) and Albia (10).
Taylor Lathrum was fifth in the shot put with a shove of 34 feet, six inches, and scored a point for eighth place with a spin of 99’5 in the discus.
Grace Stewart’s fourth-place time of 12 minutes, 8.35 seconds in the 3000 and Emma Olejniczak’s 2:37.51 clocking for seventh place in the 800 were the only other individual event placings for the Jayettes.
Breanna Penenger, Isabel Saemisch, Sid Vancil and Olejniczak were fifth in the distance medley in 4:46.76, with Olejniczak, Vancil, Penenger and Stewart teaming for seventh in the 4×400 (time n/a) while Haileigh Kenyon, Vancil, Lathrum and Saemisch crossed eighth in the sprint medley (2:17.73).
Perry also scored in the 4×800 when Alejandra Rivera, Star Love, Gabby West and McKinley Thompson turned in an eighth-place time of 11:27.3.
The next action for the Perry girls will be Tuesday when they visit Van Meter, which is serving as host site for the ADM Girls Relays. The Jayettes will then compete in the Ballard Girls Relays April 29.
