ROLAND — One day after a pair of disappointing losses, the Perry softball team responded with two wins in the final day of the Roland-Story Kiwanis Tournament.

Class 4A No. 7 Perry (18-6) made quick work of Gilbert in their 2:30 p.m. game, rolling to a 14-0 win in three innings. The team spent the intervening hours hanging out in Ames and having a team-unity event, returning to Roland for an 8 p.m. contest with the hosts, who the Jayettes blanked, 3-0.

Perry scored four times in the first, nine times in the second and once in the third to overwhelm Gilbert (2-15), who the Jayettes had defeated, on the Tigers own diamond, by an 8-0 final Tuesday.

Sid Vancil threw three innings of scoreless, two-hit ball to pick up the victory. She struck out two along the way.

Adriana Eastman continued to swing a torrid bat, launching a solo home run in the third and finishing 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Jo Diw was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, with both Emma Olejniczak and Gabby West 2-for-2.

Alyssa Kruger and Rachel Kinney each had two hits, with Kruger stealing a base, while Vancil and Brooke Huntington both supplied singles.

Perry was the visiting team in the nightcap, scoring twice in the first and adding a final tally in the seventh.

Vancil walked, stole second and moved to third on a Kruger base hit in the first. Kinney’s RBI-single scored Vancil, with a sacrifice fly from Olejniczak plating Kruger.

The Jayette run in the seventh came when Kinney double and sped home on an Eastman RBI-single.

Olejniczak kept the Norsemen off the scoreboard by scattering six hits over seven innings and issuing no walks. She finished with 10 strikeouts.

Kinney was 3-for-4 with two double and Eastman 2-for-4 with Gabby West 2-for-3. Diw, Kruger, Olejniczak and Huntington also had hits for the Jayettes.

Perry hosts No. 4 Winterset Monday before making a non-conference trip to Clarke Tuesday. An improved Carroll team visits the PAC Wednesday, with Perry to entertain No. 11 Boone Thursday.
