NEWTON — The Perry girls soccer team saw their overall record move to 3-2 this season after dividing a pair of game in tournament action Saturday.

Perry trailed Des Moines Lincoln, 2-0, at halftime of their first game, but rallied behind freshman scoring machine Natalie Martinez for a 3-2 victory.

Newton grabbed a 1-0 lead over Perry after the first half of their contest, then tacked on three additional scores after the intermission to claim a 4-0 victory.

The hosts were 9-0 victors over PCM, with DM Lincoln shutting out PCM, 2-0, in the other games at the tourney.

Martinez scored off a scramble in front of the net and on a pair of break-away plays to lift the Jayettes over the Railsplitters. She now has 12 goals in five games and trails on Marina Brightman of Winterset (15) and Emily Murphy of Burlington (14 in six games) for the most goals in Class 2A.

Martinez had two shots on goal against Newton, but the Cardinal keeper turned both attempts aside to preserve the shutout. Perry goalie Amparo Menendez was credited with a high total of 18 saves in the loss and was responsible for seven saves in the Jayette victory.

Perry is on the road Tuesday with a visit to Bondurant-Farrar, with a trip to Boone scheduled for Thursday.
