Perry grapplers hit the mats at Harlan Saturday

HARLAN — Perry competed in 11 of 14 weight classes Saturday at the Dan Hill Invitational, with 120-pounder Cole Nelson winning his division.

Winterset topped Logan-Magnolia, 251.5-235.5, for top team honors, with Glenwood third at 171.5 and host Harlan fourth at 165. Denison-Schleswig (85), Perry (71.5), Council Bluffs Abraham Lincon (71) and West Central Valley (49.5) were also in action.

Nelson began his quick tourney stay with a pin of Winterset’s Zeke Hoven in 1 minute, 30 seconds, the second time in three days Nelson had pinned Hoven. He then needed just 2:30 to record a 15-0 technical fall over Hugo Medina (D-S) to win the 120-pound bracket.

Heavyweight Alex Gomez was third for Perry. He responded with an opening loss by fall to score a 9-6 decision and an 8-2 decision, then secured third place with a 9-7 win.

Finishing fourth for Perry was 132-pounder Tanner Burgin. He was 1-2 overall, with his victory coming by pinfall.

Placing fifth for the Bluejays were Jeb Stewart, who was 2-2 with two decisions at 152, and Daniel Cornelio, who was 1-2 with a pin at 138 while Ian Castellanos was also 1-2 with a pin in finishing fifth at 126.

Taylor Atwell was sixth at 113 and Jose Chavez sixth at 182 for the Jays, with Keegan Snyder (160), Kain Killmer (170) and Brian Hernandez (220) also in action.

Perry did not have entrants at 106, 145, or 195.

Perry will join Colfax-Mingo and Ogden for a quadrangularl at Woodward-Granger Tuesday before hosting North Polk for a Raccoon River Conference dual Thursday.
