Perry harriers visit West Marshall for HOIAC meet

STATE CENTER, IA — Hilly Lincoln Valley Golf Course was the site Oct. 10 as West Marshall hosted the HOIAC Cross Country Meet.

Nevada won both crowns, claiming the boys with 26 points and the girls with 44 points. The Bluejays (123) were fifth of eight in the former event and the Jayettes (144) fifth of eight in the later.

Carter Hiland of Nevada won the boys title in 18 minutes, 2.04 seconds. Perry had one harrier earn All-HOIAC status, and that was junior Yonas Andemichael, who crossed fourth in 18:29.81.

Ganon Meis was 18th in 20:11.01, Thad Stewart 20th in 20:17.23, Owen Myers 31st in 21:40.86 and Bryce Anliker 44th in 22:22.74 to account for the Perry scoring. Aidan Carlson (46th, 22:35.2) and Juan Hernandez (49th, 23:08.12) were also in the varsity race.

Perry had nine other harriers in the competition, with Chad Gray (23:15.78), Kyeo Augustine (24:08.95), and Jonathan Chavez (24:07.53) leading the pack. Mason Hoffman (24:53.43), Oswald Cornelio-Vasquez (26:31.21), Minasey Tewelde (26:31.81), Kyle Hernandez (27:23.31), Isaac Ballard (31:43.88), and Angel Rodriguez (31:53.09) were also on the course.

Claire Truesdell of Roland-Story broke the girls tape in 21:13.46, with Perry’s Taryn Nehring the first Jayette after finishing in 23:05 for 12th place.

Mylah Meis (24th, 25:14.86), Amy Diaz (26th, 25:40.81), Natalie Castillo (38th, 27:09.24), and Mercedes Ponce (44th, 28:26.93) rounded out the five-girl Perry roster.

The two-mile boys middle school race was won by PCM at 52 points, with Perry fourth of six at 87.

Thomas Clark-Obbink of Perry was the runner-up in 12:43.7, just five seconds from overall victory.

Ivan Willett (12th, 13:57.4), George Krohn (15th, 14:08.1), Gavin Leslie (22nd, 14:45.4), and Edwyrd Stell (36th, 16:36) scored for Perry, with Diego Diaz-Cardenas (39th, 17:21.8) running for the Jays as well.

PCM was also the girls middle school winner, doing so with 39 points. Perry had a score of 108, finishing fifth in the six-team field.

Lily Myers was fourth in 14:08.44 and Harper Peterson 10th in 15:17.8 to pace the Jayettes. Points also came from Payton Pierchbacher (27th, 17:52.2), Aleah Karolus (29th, 18:25.27), and Haley Nelson (38th, 21;45.99), with Jadelyn Hoffman (39th, 22:34.57) also on the course.

Perry will compete Wednesday at Glenwood in a Class 3A State Qualifying Meet.
