Perry honors 2015-2016 State Recognition recipients

Students and staff that received All-State or other suitable distinctions were honored Tuesday before Perry's boys basketball game with Saydel. From left are Sidney Vancil, Skylar Cunningham, Sarah Sweet, Mariah McNamara, Alicia Calderon, Brooke Huntington, Breanna Penenger, Grace Stewart and Victoria Hegstrom.

A large and impressive group of Perry students, staff and administrators were recognized before Tuesday’s boys basketball game with Saydel for having received State Recognition in a variety of fields and activities.

Honored were:

  • IGCA Academic All-State Volleyball: Victoria Hegstrom
  • IHSMA All-State Vocal Festival: Breanna Peneger
  • IHSSA Large Group All-State: Readers Theater — Brooke Huntington, Janet Ortiz, Alicia Calderon, Mariah McNamara and Sarah Sweet and Skylar Cunningham and Sidney Vancil for Short Film
  • DMACC State Automotive Skills Contest: Tim Twogood, Noah Brandt and Devon Patrick.
  • ISDTA All Iowa Honor Dance/Drill Team: Brooke Garnes, Hannah Meister and Maddy Jans. The team will perform at Wells Fargo Arena March 4 during the girls state basketball tournament.
  • IHSAA Wrestling, State Qualifiers: Kaleb Olejniczak, Zach Thompson, Gisaveri Niyibizi, Kade VanKirk and Eli Saemisch. They will begin competition tonight (Thursday) at 6 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.
  • IGCA Senior All-Star Basketball Game: Taylor Lathrum
  • Iowa High School Speech Association — Superior Judge Award: Cathy Petersen
  • Iowa High School Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association — Class 2A Central District Coach of the Year: Trevor Kittleson
  • Iowa High School Athletic Association — Character Counts Coach of the Year: Ned Menke
  • Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association — School Administrator of the Year: Lynn Ubben.

Not present were IHSCCA All-State Soccer honoree Ian Velasco and INA All-State Football selection Joe Olvera, along with Iowa State Dance/Drill Team Association Lifetime Achievement Award winner Faye Southward and IHSAA Bowling State Qualifier Garrhett Bucklew, who competes as a member of the Waukee team. Also absent was Auto Skills Contest winner Brandt.
