Perry Hy-Vee evacuated after smoke fills entrance

Perry firefighters mounted the roof of the Perry Hy-Vee Tuesday afternoon in order to investigate the cause of smoke that filled the entrance of the grocery store.

Fire was reported about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at the Perry Hy-Vee at 1215 141st St..

The grocery store was evacuated as a precaution, and employees and customers were seen in the parking lot area outside the store.

Smoke reportedly was visible inside the front of the store, according to witnesses.

An employee indicated the HVAC unit on the roof was a possible source of the smoke.

The Perry Volunteer Fire Department responded and could be seen accessing the building’s roof with a ladder truck.

The Perry Police Department also responded.
