Fair weather and fine fellowship — and fresh fish — combined to lure a large crowd to the first Lenten Fish Fry Friday evening, hosted by the St. Patrick’s Knights of Columbus.

Held on each of the first six Fridays in Lent at St. Pat’s gymnasium at Fifth and Lucinda streets in Perry, the dinners are served from 5:30-7 p.m.

A singular addition to the Friday feasts is the ongoing sale of raffle tickets for a drawing to be held March 23 at the final fish fry for the RAGBRAI bicycle of Roland “Whitey” Schleisman of Perry. Schleisman was a longtime Perry sports booster and member of the St. Pat’s Knights of Columbus. He died in 2015.

Friday’s menu featured fried and baked pollock, the latter dipped in a batter made with the closely guarded secret recipe of Chris Hinds, along with baked potatoes and french fries, garlic bread, grilled cheese and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and coleslaw. A wide variety of desserts round out the Lenten feast, with juices and coffee provided.

New to this year’s standard menu were fish tacos, and fried shrimp are now an every-week offering for an additional $2.

The prices for the all-you-can-eat dinners are $8 for single adults, with children ages 5 to 10 eating for $4.50 and families of any size paying a flat fee of $25.

The St. Jude Council 1243 of the Knights of Columbus was chartered in 1907.
