Ten members of the Perry Lions Club participated in the semi-annual roadside clean up project, known familiarly as “Walking the Ditch.”

The Lions pick up trash along both sides of Iowa Highway 141 from the Dawson Corner to F Avenue, a two-mile section of roadway. An estimated 350 pounds of litter was removed from the roadway this season.

Walking the Ditch were Perry Lions Gary Becker, Ray Harden, Lou Hoger, Jim McCauley, Harley McGuire, Roger Niemeyer, Richard Saemisch, Trisha Smith, David Summerson and Mike Wilson.

After fortifying themselves with a supper at the Hotel Pattee, the Lions judged the entries to the annual Peace Poster Contest, which the club sponsors for Perry’s sixth grade art students. The theme for this year’s contest was Leading by Compassion.

Many of the students incorporated the current war between Ukraine and Russia into their art works, and their posters also hinted at ways that peace could be achieved.

The top three winners receive given monetary awards, and the best poster will be taken to the Iowa Lions Club State Convention and judged alongside other students’ work from across the state.

Judging the Perry posters were Perry Lions Gary Becker, Lou Hoger, Richard Jones, Jim McCauley, Trisha Smith and David Summerson.
