The strong west winds and the intermittent rain showers last week did not discourage the Perry Lions Club from their semi-annual roadside cleanup project for Earth Day.

Nine members of the club met at the corner of Iowa Highway 141 and F Avenue and worked their way two miles westward to the Dawson corner at D Avenue, wearing their reflective yellow-green vests and toting blaze-orange trash bags.

The crew picked up trash in the ditches on both sides of the roadway, ending up with several hundred pounds of trash. The most challenging items were parts of an automobile that was involved in an accident. Plastic and metal car parts were scattered over a wide area. Two large trash bags were quickly filled with the debris from that spot alone.

This service project has been an activity of the Perry Lions club for more than 25 years. The next cleanup on this section of the roadway in scheduled for early October.

Lions participating in the spring cleanup included Gary Becker, Pat Graney, Harley McGuire, Don Ruggle, Trisha Smith, David Summerson and Mike Wilson. Lions Club members John Andorf and Ray Harden drove support vehicles.

After the project was completed, the Lions convened at the Hotel Pattee for their regular business meeting. At the meeting, Perry Lions Club President Harley McGuire presented Lion Gary Becker with the Iowa Lions Club Key Membership Award for recruiting two new club members this year.
