Dr. Nick Palmer, a staff physician at the Dallas County Hospital, addressed the members of the Perry Lions Club at their July 22 meeting.
Lion Gary Becker introduced Palmer, who discussed men’s health and lifestyles and encouraged the Lions to get regular screenings in order to detect illnesses earlier. He also encouraged the members to get more exercise, eat a healthy diet, reduce alcohol consumption and quit smoking.
In club business, outgoing Lions Club President Trisha Smith passed the gavel to incoming Lions Club President Harley McGuire, who will hold the post during the 2024-2025 fiscal year. John Andorf is the club’s vice president.
McGuire then led the induction ceremony for a new Perry Lion, Nick Eakins, whose membership was sponsored by Ray Harden. Richard Saemisch was presented with a certificate of appreciation for his recent sponsorship of new Perry Lion Andy Stout.
On Sept. 9 the Perry Lions Club will host after-dinner speaker Ty Smedes, a noted outdoor photographer and writer whose work has appeared in “Outdoor Iowa,” “The Iowan,” “Our Iowa” and other publications about Iowa’s wildlife and wild places.
Smedes is also the author of three books about Iowa’s wildlife, with a fourth in production that is expected out in September. His Lions Club program will recount his trip to Mongolia, illustrated with photos and videos.
Ray Harden is the secretary of the Perry Lions Club.
