The Perry Lions Club welcomed a guest speaker at their January meeting, the Rev. Max Phillips, chief executive officer of the Perry Lutheran Homes.

Phillips delivered an informative talk about the Lutheran Homes from its beginnings in 1956 to the present day, including the recent additions of the Spring Valley Assisted Living and the Rowley Masonic Community, which are parts of the Lutheran Homes’ continuum of care.

Possible future uses of the old Masonic Home building were also touched on by Phillips, who said the mechanical needs of the building must first be addressed. He also praised the Perry Lutheran Homes’ administration and staff, whose hard work led to the facilities’ deficiency-free status in a state inspection that took place last fall.

Lion Mike Wilson, co-chair of the Perry Lions’ eyeglass collection project, delivered a report on this fall’s effort, which yielded 155 pairs of glasses and three sets of hearing aids. The donated items were taken to the Lions Club state office in Ames.

Wilson suggested that next year the Lions Club should advertise that they can also use hearing aids to donate to the needy. The Perry Lions thanked the five local businesses that helped the club collect the eyeglasses: Hy-Vee, Fareway, Medicap Pharmacy, the Hotel Pattee and Eye Care Associates.

Ray Harden is the secretary of the Perry Lions Club.
