Perry man arrested after trying to flee Perry police Friday

Wesley Allen Jenkins, 34, of Perry was arrested Friday on charges of eluding-25 or more above limit, speeding-25 or more above limit, careless driving, reckless driving, two counts of driving while suspended, operation with interlock, failure to obey a yield sign and failure to obey a stop sign and yield the right of way.

A Perry man was arrested Friday morning after allegedly trying to outrun officers of the Perry Police Department.

Wesley Allen Jenkins, 34, of 2620 McKinley St., Perry, was charged with eluding-25 or more above limit, speeding-25 or more above limit, careless driving, reckless driving, two counts of driving while suspended, operation with interlock, failure to obey a yield sign and failure to obey a stop sign and yield the right of way.

The incident began about 7:45 a.m. Friday near the intersection of, where an officer of the Perry Police Department tried to initiate a traffic stop on a 2009 Chevrolet Impala, driven by Jenkins.

Jenkins did not stop but drove away at high speed, first southbound on Eighth Street and then eastbound on Willis Avenue at speeds exceeding 60 mph, according to public safety radio traffic.

Jenkins’ vehicle left the roadway of Willis Avenue near Theater Circle and struck a “Stop Ahead” sign, where it came to rest, and Jenkins was taken into custody, according to public safety radio traffic.

Jenkins is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $8,319.52 cash or surety bond in advance of an initial appearance in Dallas County District Court.

Jenkins was arrested in Perry in January on charges of interference with official acts, second-offense possession of a controlled substance-marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. The case is pending in Dallas County District Court.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
