DES MOINES, Iowa — A Perry man has been sentenced to more than eight years in federal prison following his conviction for possessing child pornography

Michael James Hidlebaugh, 38, of Perry was sentenced to 97 months in prison for receipt of child pornography, U.S. Attorney Marc Krickbaum announced Friday.

In sentencing Hidlebaugh Sept. 17, U.S. District Court Judge Rebecca Goodgame Ebinger also ordered him to serve five years of supervised release to follow his prison term, pay $21,000 in restitution and comply with sex offender registry requirements upon release.

The investigation began in September 2017, when law enforcement received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that images of child pornography had been uploaded to Hidlebaugh’s email account.

Further investigation led to the execution of a search warrant in May 2018 at Hidlebaugh’s Perry residence, where law enforcement seized multiple electronic devices containing hundreds of images and videos of child pornography.

Hidlebaugh received child pornography from July 2016 to April 2018.

Hidlebaugh’s case was investigated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Child Exploitation Task Force. The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Southern District of Iowa.
