Perry netters fall in five sets

Kickoff will be at 6 p.m. for tonight's varsity game between Perry and visiting Greene County at Dewey Field.

SAYDEL — Perry played their first-ever volleyball match as a member of the Heart of Iowa Conference Tuesday, with host Saydel managing to escape with a five-set win.

Perry (1-7, 0-1) dropped game one, 25-22, but rebounded for a 25-21 win in game two. Saydel (1-13, 1-1) in turn scored a 25-19 victory in game three, only to see Perry force a fifth set with a 25-21 win in the fourth game. The Eagles claimed the match with a 15-10 win in the deciding game.

Kimberly Castillo and Callie Steva each had eight kills for Perry, with Kathryn West adding six. Maci Tunink had four kills, with Taylor Atwell and Kaitlyn Leber providing two kills apiece.

Atwell led the team with 23 assists, with Tunink, Leber, Steva, Castillo, Addison Huntington, and Valeria Contreras all recording a single assists apiece.

Huntington’s 27 digs were a team-high, with Leber and Atwell recording 13 apiece. Steva had 10 digs, West five, Contreras three, Castillo two, and Aidyn Hood one.

West served 23-of-24 with an ace, with Atwell 13-15-3 and Castillo 10-15-3. Leber was 13-14-1 behind the line and Steva 12-14-1, with Huntington accurate on 12-of-14 serves.

Perry visits West Marshall Thursday and plays in the AC/GC Tournament Saturday before hosting Roland-Story Tuesday.
