Perry netters finish 2-3 at Knoxville Invite

KNOXVILLE — The Perry volleyball team placed sixth at the Knoxville Invitational Saturday, with wins over Albia and Saydel highlighting the action for the Jayettes.

Perry (7-24 overall) dropped pool play contests to Pella Christian (21-14, 21-16) and ADM (21-10, 21-19) before stopping Albia (21-14, 21-16). That sent the Jayettes into the consolation bracket, where Perry topped Saydel, 21-13, 27-25, before a 21-19, 21-12 loss to their hosts.

Jayette senior Sid Vancil had a combined 72 assists at the invite, and in the process established a new school record by making 15 assists in a single set. Jo Diw added five assists, Syd Guerra and Quinn Whiton four apiece and Gabby West three, with Kacy Nevitt, Natalie Martinez and Ainsley Marburger each making one assist.

Diw smacked 53 kills for Perry, with Jaqueline Guardado tallying 14 kills while West and Isabel Saemisch added nine kills apiece, Vancil five and Whiton three. Diw, Saemisch, Vancil and West all had one block apiece.

Libero player Guerra paced the defense with 45 digs, with Vancil contributing 17 digs and Diw 14. Whiton had six digs, Saemisch four, Martinez two and West and Stephanie Garcia one each.

Vancil served 36-of-39 with six aces, with Saemisch 29-30-1 and Guardado 27-30-2 behind the line. Diw finished 17-25-4, Nevitt 5-5-1 and Marburger 2-2-1, with Guerra 30-of-31, Whiton 11-of-13 and Garcia 1-of-2.

Perry will conclude their regular season tonight with a visit from Greene County.
