A Perry resident was killed early Saturday in a head-on crash near Oelwein in rural Buchanan County.

The three-vehicle crash occurred about 2:38 a.m. Saturday on Iowa Highway 150 south of Hazleton, according to a crash report issued by the Iowa State Patrol(ISP).

The ISP is withholding the names of the victims pending notification of next of kin.

According to the crash report, a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, operated by a 27-driver from Independence, was traveling southbound on Iowa Highway 150 “when it crossed center line, striking” head on a 2008 Pontiac SD, operated by a 31-year-old Perry resident and traveling northbound on Iowa Highway 150.

The driver from Perry died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision, according to the report.

The driver of the pickup and a 21-year-old victim from Independence were injured in the crash and transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

A third vehicle, a 2021 Ford Explorer, operated by a 26-year-old driver from Fairbank, was also traveling northbound and was struck secondarily by the pickup. The injured driver was transported to Buchanan County Hospital in Independence.

A 28-year-old victim from Des Moines was also injured in the incident and was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

The accident remains under investigation, according to the ISP report.

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s office, Fayette County Sheriff’s office, Hazleton Fire and EMS also responded.
