There will be no U.S. Postal Service mail delivery Monday as federal employees observe the Columbus Day holiday.

Columbus Day is not observed by the city of Perry. Regular garbage pick up and all city services will proceed as scheduled.

Columbus Day is not observed by Dallas County. All county offices will be open, and services will provided as usual.

Columbus Day is not observed by the state of Iowa. All state offices will be open, and services will provided as usual.

The 1905 mural, “Westward,” by Edwin Howland Blashfield, is painted on the wall of the grand staircase in the Iowa State Capitol. In the mural, according to the Des Moines Pubic Art Foundation, “Pioneers are led across the West by Spirits of Enlightenment, symbolized by the air-borne female holding an open book, and Civilization, symbolized by similar figures sowing grain. The Spirits of Stream and Electricity, holding a steam engine and electric generator, respectively, follow the prairie schooner.”
