Perry sends numerous youth to AAU state wrestling tourney

DES MOINES — A total of 11 local girls and five boys competed Feb. 27-28 at Wells Fargo Arena in the AAU state wrestling tourney, with several earning spots on the final podium.

Chelsea Mickles was 4-1 with four pins to place third in the grade 9-12 185-pound bracket. Taylor Atwell (9-12, 114) and Reese Baxter (9-12, 185) both placed fourth, Atwell doing so with a 4-2 mark that featured three pins and an 11-0 major decision while Baxter was 3-2 with a trio of victories by fall.

Charity Mickles was fourth at 9-12, 120 with a 5-2 tally that included two pins, two decisions and a 14-1 major decision. Also earning a podium spot was Adeana Eddin, who won a 7-6 decision to finish 8th at grade 5-6 110 pounds.

Other Perry girls in action were Harper Peterson (5-6, 91), who was 3-2, Joey Maylum (5-6, 100) who finished 1-2 and Julie Maylum (9-12, 126) who was also 1-2. Paislee Brokaw was 2-2 at grade 3-4, 82 pounds, with Harper Welch (3-4, 91) unable to scratch together a win in two tough matches.

Ryker Norman (3-4, 54) was 4-2 for the Perry boys to place fourth, with his wins coming on two pins, a major decision and a decision.

Cash Baxter (5-6, 215) was fifth with two pins and a 2-2 mark despite wrestling up one grade classification.

Charlie Baxter (3-4, 94) was 2-2, with 1-2 marks recorded by both Coly Carhill (5-6, 65) and Hayden Splendore (5-6, 70).

Over 1,500 boys and more than 600 girls competed at the tournament.
