Perry students collect high marks at State Speech contest

DES MOINES — Perry High School students returned home with a total of 13 ratings of 1 (top) or 2 at the State Speech competition March 12. The contest was held at Des Moines North.

Students earning top ratings of 1 were Sarah Sweet (prose and storytelling), Ana Rosa Funez (literary program), Rebecca Dobson (prose) and John Borjas (improv). Earning scores of 1 in poetry were both Lauren Benjamin and Alicia Calderon.

Karley Whelchel (acting), Allie Hopkins (acting and poetry), Lauren Benjamin (radio news announcing), Madison Mason (spontaneous speaking), Camden Studer (public address), Cinthia Naranjo (poetry) and Dax Kresse (improv) all secured 2 ratings at the event.

Wendy Bollhoefer and Cathy Petersen serve as co-coaches for the PHS speech team.
