Perry swimmers cap season with successes at IWSC meet

JEFFERSON — The 2015 season came to a successful end for the Perry Summer Swim Team at the Iowa West Swim Conference meet here Saturday.

Although the team placed sixth in a nine-team field, Perry swimmers won three events, placed second four other times and finished third a total of eight times.

Carroll won the team title with 328.5 points, with Jefferson second at 286 and Denison third at 212.5. Guthrie Center (170) was fourth, wtih Sac City (154) fifth, Perry (112) sixth, Coon Rapids (96) seventh and Glidden (60) eighth, with Manning (55) capping the field. Lake City Area will return to competition next summer, having just completed the construction of a new pool.

Delaney Platt won four of the 15 medals earned by Perry. The 8U standout won the backstroke in 21.19 seconds, was the runner-up in both the freestyle (16.18) and butterfly (22.06) and finished third in the long free (44.26).

Jaylene Karolus (9-10) and Stephanie Hill (13-14) produced the other gold medal performances for Perry, with the former accomplished in 32.92 seconds and the latter in 1 minute, 10.23 seconds.

Hill was second in the backstroke in 32.3 ticks and was joined by Dannah Karolus, Breanna Penenger and Sarah Vaughn for second in the 13-14 free relay, which finished in 1:59.98.

Jaylene Karolus (9-10) was third in the butterfly in 17.53, with Haileigh Kenyon (15-18) claiming the bronze medal in both the free (27.41) and long free (1:02.73) races.

Perry’s 11-12 boys squad were bronze medal finishers three times, including in the free relay when Riese Archer, Andrew Dowd, Cristopher Gonzalez and Dylan Winey reached the wall in 2:25.26. Dowd added third-place finishes in breaststroke (44.47) and individual medley (1:24.37) as well.

Ethan Winey had the lone 13-14 boys top-three placing when he finished third in the backstroke in 34.42.

Other Perry swimmers competing Saturday were Lilly Riley (8U), Emily Dowd, Sophia McDevitt and Addison Huntington (all 9-10) and Abby Herman and Ainsley Marburger (both 11-12) for the girls side, and Alec and Aiden Burgin (both 8U), Garrett Winey (9-10), Chase Archer and Caleb Winey (both 13-14) and Devon Archer and Alex Thompson (both 15-18) for the boys team.

Perry was coached by Shannon Thompson, with Emily Hill assisting.
