Perry swimmers compete at regional meet

JOHNSTON — The Perry swim team finished their season Saturday at a regional meet in which four personal-best times were recorded by Jayette racers.

Johnston won the meet with 508 points, with West Des Moines Valley second with 470 points. Marshalltown (269) was third and Carroll (226) fourth, with Mason City (208), Atlantic (198), Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln (101), Perry (86) and Des Moines Hoover (58) completing the field. Diving points — earned during competition held Thursday — were added to the point totals of Johnston, WDM Valley, Marshalltown and Carroll.

Points were award to all places in the three relays races and to 16th in each of the eight individual events.

The meet opened with Vivian Gonzalez, Haley Vaughn, Haileigh Kenyon and Breanna Penenger placing seventh in the 200 medley relay in 2 minutes, 11.38 seconds. The time was a result of each member producing a season-best split, with four seconds taken off the total time.

 

Kenyon was 13th (2:16.07), Penenger 16th (2:20.35) and Anna Ridnour 22nd (2:32.48) in the 200 freestyle, with Vaughn placing 11th in the 200 individual medley in 2:30.81.

Gonzalez was 21st (30.71), Sadee Whitfield 22nd (33.09) and Breanna Ackerman 26th in a personal-best 35.83 in the 50 freestyle.

Kenyon (1:01.13), Whitfield (1:11.44) and Ackerman (a personal-best 1:16.91) placed 18th, 21st and 24th, respectively, in the 100 freestyle, with Penenger 13th in a personal-best 6:20.07 in the 500 freestyle.

Vaughn, Whitfield, Ridnour and Kenyon used a 1:59.89 clocking to place eighth in the 200 freestyle relay, with Gonzalez 18th in the 100 backstroke in 1:18.69.

Vaughn was 14th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.56, with Ridnour touching 20th in the event in 1:34.35.

The final event was the 400 freestyle relay, in which Gonzalez, Whitfield, Ridnour and Penenger placed eighth in 4:42.16.

The meet was the final prep swimming event for Kenyon, the lone senior on the Perry team this season.
