Perry swimmers speed to third place in 10-team IWSC meet

CARROLL — The Perry Summer Swim Team finished fourth at their 2017 conference meet. On Saturday the 2018 version of the PSST speedsters raced to third place, with 11 difference swimmers experiencing at least one individual or relay championship.[wpedon id=”85410″ align=”left”]

Carroll nipped Guthrie County, 276-272, for the Iowa West Swim Conference team title, with Perry — who had a total of 10 races in which the squad, for various reasons, had no entry — placing third with 214 points.

Denison was fourth at 204 and Jefferson fifth at 166, with Coon Rapids (140), Sac City (1-1), Lake City (53), Glidden (48) and Manning (29) completing the field.

Sophia McDevitt (11-12) led the PSST girls with four wins, with Quin Mahler-Moreno (11-12) winning three times while Sarah Prombo (8U) had one victory.

Andrew Dowd, Eli Noble, Drew Storey and Ethan Winey (all 15-18) had double-wins for the Perry boys, with Isaac Winey (8U) and Kane Mahler-Moreno (9-10) both winning once.

Finishing second twice for the PSST boys were Isaac Winey (8U), Garrett Winey (11-12) and Isaac Noble (13-14), with single runner-up finishes claimed by Joel Storey (11-12), Marcus Nelsen (13-14) and Sam Ridnour (13-14).

A total of fifteen swimmers earned third-place finishes, with Jaylene Karolus (13-14) leading the way with four such efforts for the girls squad. Girls placing third in two events were Izzy Powell (8U) and Dannah Karolus (15-18), with Maddie McDevitt (9-10) touching third once.

Garrett Winey (11-12), Isaac Noble (13-14) and Ethan Winey (15-18) were third on two occasions for the Perry boys, with Isaac Winey (8U), Bryan Anderson, Kane Mahler-Moreno and Townes Wilson (all 9-10), Joel Storey (11-12), Marcus Nelsen and Sam Ridnour (both 13-14) and Drew Storey (15-18) finishing third one time each.

Numerous swimmers earned Perry All-Around All-Star status by compiling the required number of points during the season. Five PSST members: Isaac Winey (8U), Kane Mahler-Moreno (9-10), Quin Mahler-Moreno (11-12), Sophia McDevitt (11-12) and Dannah Karolus (15-18) earned Conference All-Around All-Star recognition.
