The Bluejay dugout -- shown here Wednesday -- was a much happier place Thursday, as Perry swept host Roland-Story in a non-conference twinbill.

STORY CITY — One day after being held hitless, the Perry baseball team remembered to bring their bats with them for a non-conference doubleheader at Roland-Story Thursday and totaled 18 runs on 20 hits for wins of 10-6 and 8-2.

Perry jumped to a 4-0 lead in the opener on a RBI-double from Zach Roberts, with a single from Blake Lansing plating two runs while Alex Long knocked in a run with a RBI-groundout.

Brandon  Kenyon scored on a Lansing single to highlight a two-run Perry second, with a Will Whiton home run sparking a 3-run third as the Bluejays streaked to a 9-1 lead.

The Norse closed to within 9-6 after plating five runs in the bottom of the third. Tyler Horvick had a RBI-double, with Nick Moore and John Barclay driving in runs with singles before Tyler Rivers smacked a tw0-run double.

Perry starter Whiton was relieved by Long with one-out in the frame, with Long getting out of the jam without further damage.

The Jays tacked on a final run in the fifth as Whiton collected the win and Long a save on the hill. The former went 2.1 frames, allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits while Long tossed 4.2 frames in which he surrendered but two hits. Whiton struck out four and walked one while Long issued five walks and had one strikeout.

Whiton had three RBIs in the win, with Lansing plating two runs. Kyle Nevitt had two stolen bases for Perry and Whiton one.

Zach Shadlow was touched for eight runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings in being handed the loss. He was relieved by Rivers, who yielded two runs on five hits in 4.2 frames. Neither R-S pitcher walked a batter; Rivers had six strikeouts and Shadlow two.

The Bluejays scored six times in the third inning to grab an 8-1 lead en route to finishing the twinbill sweep.

Janier Puente singled in Nevitt in the second for a 1-0 lead, with Adan Medina hitting a run-scoring double in the third as Perry regained the lead, at 2-1, after the Norse had scoring in their half of the second.

Perry’s big inning was fueled by a two-run double from Whiton, a pair of wild pitches that plated runs and by a sacrifice fly from Robert and RBI-single from Long.

R-S scored once in the sixth but it was of no avail as the Jays scored the decisive win.

Lansing allowed one run on two hits and three walks while striking out one in three innings of work to pick up the win. Puente threw three innings, allowing one run on two hits and four walks while fanning five, with Medina striking out three in one stanza on the rubber.

Kade VanKirk also doubled for Perry, with Whiton and Long stealing a base each.

Landon Stalzer went three innings for the hosts, surrendering six runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks. Barclay allowed two runs on two hits and two walks in two frames, with Jerald Fritz touched for two hits in two innings. Barclay struck out two and Stalzer one.

Perry returns to action Monday with a trip to DC-G, with visits to Carroll Wednesday and Boone Thursday before ADM comes to Progressive Field June 5.
