Friday was World Kindness Day 2020, and a word of kindness was shown to Perry’s teachers and school staff members when Fernando Ruiz’s Tacos el Viejo food truck was enlisted to serve them free tacos.
The free World Kindness meal was the brainchild of Perry booster and district parent Eddie Diaz, who said he got the idea Thursday morning and within 12 hours had hired Ruiz and his truck, received the blessing of PCSD Superintendent Clark Wicks and lined up most of the funding for the feats.
Volunteer Elizabeth Meurer, who created banners for the taco truck reading, “Thank You, Teachers!” and “We Love Educators!” also kept a list of the taco-eating teachers, and 132 people were served between 2:15 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the Perry Elementary School east parking lot.
“This has been another great example of the Perry community coming together and showing our support for our school employees, who have been under a lot of pressure during these wild times,” said Diaz. “It shows how awesome Perry is when it comes to supporting each other in the community.”
