Perry freshman Jaylene Karolus, shown running earlier this season in Woodward, set a new school record Thursday in the 3000.

CARROLL — If the goal Thursday were the sheer amassing of points, Perry track head coaches Ben Coy (Bluejays) and Matt Hardy (Jayettes) could have been excused for being somewhat downcast.

However, Hardy’s Jayettes met their seeded expectation and had a new school record set, while Coy’s Bluejays set either new personal-bests or else established a season-best effort 12 different times.

“The boys competed very well,” Coy said. “We had some individuals step up for us tonight, such as Kaleb Olejniczak who ran two personal-bests tonight.”

“Hayden McFarland is another that comes to mind,” he added. “The coaching staff asked him to come back and run the 800 in the distance medley after running a big personal-best split in the 4×800, which is tough to do with the short amount of time between the events, and because of that we were able to score a couple extra points. As a team we were seeded to get 38 points and ended up with 46 points.”

Carlisle won the boys side with 176 points, with ADM the runner-up at 140. Winterset was third at 118.5, with Boone (91), Bondurant-Farrar (71.5), Carroll (68), Perry (46) and Ballard (25) completing the field.

Carlisle also claimed the girls crown after earning 168 points. ADM was second at 153, with B-F (112), Carroll (83.5), Ballard (77), Winterset (62), Boone (61.5) and Perry (22) also in action.

Olejniczak sped to second place in the 200 in 23.66 seconds and placed second in the 400 in 51.72.

Kato Dougan was third, in 11.63, in the 100, with Bryan Funez crossing eighth in the 800 in 2:16.04 while Jeb Stewart ran the 400 hurdles in 1:07.75 and Eduardo Sanchez the 1600 in 5:08.06.

Luke Holtorf shoved the shot put 42 feet, 9 inches to earn fifth place, with Cole Snyder’s spin of 113’5 placing eight in the discus while Dougan hit the sand at 18’10-1/4 in the long jump.

Funez, McFarland, Sanchez and Mario Cruz were third in the 4×800 in 8:46.16, with Dougan, Olejniczak, Joseph Clark and Justin Stammer fourth in the sprint medley in 1:38.02 while Jordan Long, Stammer, Clark and McFarland placed fifth in the distance medley in 4:02.44.

Dougan, Olejniczak, Clark and Funez were seventh in the 4×400 (3:41.4), with Long, Stammer, Collin Malmberg and Carlos Calderon seventh in the 4×100 (49.17) while Stewart, Ben Stika, Logan Haynes and Jasyon Chavez placed seventh in the shuttle hurdle (1:20.51).

Freshman Jaylene Karolus continued to make her mark for the Jayettes. She recently ran the fastest 1500 for any Jayette in at least a decade, and on Thursday took down Grace Stewart’s 2018 school mark of 11:14.89 in the 3000 by striding over the line in 11:14.34.

Karolus was fourth in the event, and also fourth in the 1500, in which she clocked in at 5:18.85, just .51 ticks behind her milestone time set Friday at Ballard.

Mary Ann Riesberg ran the 100 (15.02) and 400 (1:14.26), with Kennedy Tunink competing in the 200 (29.2) and Cindy Troung in the 800 (2:58.37).

Quinn Whiton’s flight of 14’1-1/4 placed seventh in the long jump, with Sydney Helmers the top Jayette in the discus at 70’8 and Phoebe Stewart the lead Perry thrower in the shot put at 23’3-1/2.

Karolus, Whiton, Kennedy Tunink and Peyton Tunink finished sixth in the distance medley (4:48.46), with Whiton, Troung, and the Tunink cousins seventh in the sprint medley (2:06.37) while Cris Gomez, Bella Nath, Viviana Escalante and Stephanie Garcis placed seventh in the 4×800 (13:37.89).

The foursome of Riesberg, Gomez, Escalante and Zari Hopper were eighth in the 4×100 ini 1:01.37, with a 2:21.59 from the foursome of Lanie Fish, Alondra Avila, Joanna Rodriguez and Garcia also placing eighth.

Perry received a point for eighth place in the 4×400 as well, with Troung, Whiton and the two Tunink’s finishing in 4:48.41.

A return visit to Carroll Thursday for the state qualifying meet is the next competition on the docket for the Perry teams.
