Perry volleyball looking for offensive consistency

TAMA, IA — Perry came up short in four matches Saturday at the South Tama County tourney, two days after being swept by visiting West Marshall in HOIAC play.

Perry (3-19) fell to STC (2-12) 21-13, 21-12, to BGM (5-20) 21-16, 21-6 and to Class 2A No. 6 Lisbon (23-2) 21-9, 21-10. The Jayettes also dropped a 21-8, 21-8 match to Belle Plaine (15-9).

The setbacks came after West Marshall (10-9) rolled to a 25-7, 25-15, 25-13 sweep in the Perry gym Thursday.

Assist leaders Saturday for Perry were Taylor Atwell (18), Gaby Orellana (8) and Yamilet Ortega (7), with Ashley Cerna and Maci Tunink having one each. Kathryn West led the team with 10 kills, with Cerna having six, Tunink five, Addison Huntington four, Atwell, Ortega and Charity Parnell two each and Callie Steva and Miley Sanchez one apiece.

Parnell finished with 25 digs and Cerna with 21, with Atwell tallying 14 and Huntington eight. Yamilet Gonzalez provided six digs, Tunink five, Ortega and Steva three apiece and Sanchez, Orellana and Madison Stika one each. Steva had 3.5 blocks at the net, with Tunink making one and West an assisted block.

West served 14-15-1 and Cerna 8-9-1 with Steva 11-of-12 and Atwell 12-of-14. Tunink was 7-of-9, Huntington 4-of-6, Parnell 5-of-6, Ortega 3-of-3 and Gonzalez 3-of-3. The team was 67-of-77 (83 percent) with only two aces.

Ortega had seven assists, Atwell three and Tunink one against West Marshall, with Cerna making six kills, Sanchez three, and Atwell, Huntington and Tunink one each.

Sanchez had one block and Tunink an assisted block, with Ortega recording six digs and Cerna, Parnell and Steva five each. Huntington and West both had three digs, Atwell two, and Tunink one.

Cerna was 8-8-1 serving and Ortega was 10-of-10 and Parnell 6-of-7. Steva was 3-of-4, Tunink 2-of-3, Atwell 1-of-3, Orellana 1-of-1 and Huntington 0-for-1. Perry was 31-37-1 (84 percent) in the match from the serving line.
