Perry volleyball team finishes 2-4 at Bondurant-Farrar Classic

BONDURANT — The Perry volleyball team participated in the 16-team, three-venue Skip Anderson Classic Saturday. The Jayettes finished with an overall mark of 2-4 at the tourney, which begins with four brackets of four teams each playing at three different venues.

Perry (3-4) opened play by falling, 2-0, to both Waverly-Shell Rock (21-18, 21-9) and Gilbert (21-17, 21-9). Davis County then escaped with a 2-1 win over the Jayettes on scores of 23-21, 20-22, 15-13.

Teams were seeded again after the first pool brackets were completed, with Perry sent from the cool confines of Anderson Elementary into a steamy gym at the B-F Middle School.

A 2-0 win (21-15, 21-9) over PCM was followed by a 2-0 defeat of West Marshall (21-15, 14), with Perry falling to Boone, 2-0 (21-12, 24-22) in their final match of the tourney.

Perry served well throughout the event, with Sidney Vancil finishing 40-of-41 with six aces while Taylor Lathrum was 27-of-29 with an ace and Victoria Hegstrom 24-of-26 with two aces. Jo Diw was 44-49-14 behind the line, with Ellie Nielsen 35-40-7 and Grace Marburger 30-35-5.

Nielsen had a team-best 20 kills in the six matches, with Hegstrom and Diw tallying 16 kills apiece, Lathrum and Marburger nine apiece and Vancil two. Vancil provided 53 of Perry’s 60 assists, with Diw making four blocks, Hegstrom and Marburger two each and Nielsen and Lathrum one each.

Marburger led Perry with 15 digs, with Hegstrom making 13 digs and Diw and Nielsen 11 each. Mariah Duffy added six digs and Vancil five, with Lathrum providing two digs.

Perry returns to action Thursday at the ADM Invitational, with play beginning at 4 p.m. They will then host ADM for a Raccoon River Conference dual September 8, with the JV starting at 5:30 p.m.
