TAMA — A 3-2 effort Saturday helped the Perry volleyball team finish in fifth place at the South Tama County Tournament.
The early results were not encouraging, as Perry fell to Lisbon (17-4) by scores of 21-7 and 21-8 and to host STC (11-11) 21-7 and 21-13.
However, the Jayettes (4-15) responded with strong play to roll off three consecutive wins, fueled in no small part by a combination of solid defense and accurate serving. Perry had a total of 143 digs in the tourney and served 159-of-178 (89 percent) overall with 16 ace serves.
A 21-13, 21-17 win over BGM (1-13) turned Perry in the winning direction, with a 21-17, 13-21, 15-8 victory against Belle Plaine (6-12) following.
Fifth place was secured after Perry topped East Marshall (6-12) with a 21-16, 19-21, 15-8 result.
Ashley Cerna led the defense with 34 combined digs, with Addison Huntingon recording 29 digs and Peyton Tunink 27. Taylor Atwell made 20 digs, Kathryn West 12, Valeria Contreras 10, Callie Steva eight and Kimberly Castillo three.
Cerna served 34-36-2, West 28-33-1, Huntington 30-31-7, and Tunink 23-27-2. Castillo had four aces while serving 18-of-21, with Atwell finishing 23-of-24.
Atwell distributed 59 assists, Tunink and Huntington three apiece and Castillo, Cerna, Contreras, and Steva one each.
Tunink’s 36 kills paced the offense, with Cerna having 19 kills and West 13. Steva finished with nine kills, Castillo with four and Atwell with two.
