Five Bluejay junior varsity matmen take part in Marshalltown tourney

Perry senior Cole Snyder needed just 28 seconds to record a pin over his Carlisle opponent at 182 pounds Thursday. Snyder was 5-0 at Williamsburg Saturday.

WILLIAMSBURG — Four Perry wrestlers finished in first place and three others in second Saturday at the Williamsburg Round Robin.

Williamsburg won the team competition with 221 points, with Grinnell second at 145. Perry was third with 136 points, with Pella (118), Mt. Pleasant (75) and Fairfield (59) completing the field.

Riece Graham (20-2) was 2-0 with a technical fall (20-3, 5 minutes, 27 seconds) and an 8-4 decision to win top honors at 106 pounds, with three pins, a 5-0 decision and a 17-2 tech fall lifting Cole Snyder (16-14) to a 5-0 mark and first place at 182 pounds.

Jacob Nelson (30-6) was 5-0 and first at 145 pounds. The senior won in Sudden Victory I (7-2), by 19-3 tech fall, with a pin in 5:27 and with decisions of 10-7 and 2-0.

Also winning his bracket was 160-pounder Wilber Ramirez (18-14) who finished 4-1. Ramirez won twice by pin, once by decision and once by medical forfeit.

Eighth-ranked Cole Nelson (27-6) was 4-1 and the runner-up at 113. He won by tech fall, major decision, pin and injury default before losing by fall to Pella’s Ryan Hancock (22-2) in his final match.

Bryan Funez (4-4) was 3-1 and second at 132, winning by decision, tech fall and pin, with brother Erick (24-12) 4-1 and second at 138. Erick won twice by pin and by both decision and medical forfeit, with his loss a pin by top-ranked Jalen Schropp (39-0) of Williamsburg.

Tanner Burgin (12-16 at 126), Ever Tobar (8-11 at 152) and Zach Darr (5-23 at 220) all finished 1-4 and in fifth place in their respective weight classes. Burgin’s win was a 5-2 decision, with Tobar winning a 10-2 major decision and Darr a 5-2 decision.

Although 0-3 for the day, Alan Gomez (2-8) was fourth in a reduced heavyweight field.

Perry did not compete at 120, 170 or 195 pounds.

PERRY JUNIOR VARSITY
MARSHALLTOWN — While the Perry varsity was in Williamsburg, five junior varsity wrestlers traveled to compete in Marshalltown’s JV Invite.

Alex Fickbohm was 2-1 with pins in 2:42 and 4:28, with Rylee Ray 2-1 with rapid-fire pins in 12 seconds and nine seconds.

Brian Hernandez was winless in both of his matches, with Leonard Jacobson and Carlos Sandoval both unable to find victory in any of their three matches.

Perry returns to action Thursday by taking part in a quadrangular hosted by Ballard. They will take part in the Raccoon River Conference tournament Saturday, with Winterset the host school.
