Perry wrestlers entertain 18 teams for Bluejay Invitational

Five mats stretched over two gyms were required to accommodate the 19-team field at the Bluejay Invitational Saturday.

Class 2A top-ranked West Delaware won the meet with 295 points, with 1A No. 3 Logan-Magnolia second at 200, 2A No. 5 Sergeant Bluff-Luton third at 168, Dowling Catholic fourth at 163 and 2A No. 4 Webster City fifth at 142.5.

Spencer (118.5), Carroll (110), Spirit Lake Park (107), Van Meter/Earlham (102), and Woodward-Granger (101) finished 6-10, with Carlisle (76), South Hamilton (65), Panorama (63), West Marshall (60), Perry (46), Eagle Grove (25.5), Saydel (22), Collins-Maxwell (21), and Des Moines North/Hoover (11).

The hosts finished with three grapplers on the podium, with 2A No. 7 Cole Nelson the runner-up at 120 pounds while Jeb Stewart was fifth at 145 and Alex Gomez (9-9) was seventh at 285.

Nelson (21-3) started with a pin over Chase Burnette of Carroll, then scored a 10-3 decision over Saydel’s Kolton Kelley. He reached the finals with a 1-0 win over No. 9 Noah Parmalee of SB-L, but was stopped, 3-1 in Tiebreaker 1, by Johnathon Burnette (23-1) of Spirit Lake Park.

Stewart (14-12) stood fifth after posting a 3-2 mark in a tough bracket. He had a 14-0 major decision, a pin, and a 6-2 decision along the way.

Gomez had three pins after an opening loss and a bye to finish 3-1 in earning a spot in the placings at heavyweight.

Tanner Burgin (6-17) was 2-2 at 138, but no other Perry grappler recorded a win.

In action were Taylor Atwell (106 pounds), Ian Castellanos (2-17, at 126), Kyle Hernandez (0-2 at 132), Anthony Tlaceca (0-4 at 152), Keegan Snyder (6-15 at 160), Kain Killmer (0-10 at 170), Brian Hernandez (1-12 at 182) and Kevin Colin (0-2 at 220).

Perry did not compete at 113 or 195.
