Perry wrestlers fifth in 17-team invitational

PARKERSBURG — Perry sent a shortened roster on a two-hour drive to the Keith Vry Invitational Saturday, with five of eight Bluejays placing, lifting the team to fifth place overall.

Hosted by Aplington-Parkersburg, the team title went to powerhouse Don Bosco, who racked up 306 points. Crestwood was second at 177 and Clarion-Goldfield third at 167, with Charles City (93.5) and Perry (82) completing the top five.

Kaleb Olejniczak had little trouble en route to being crowned champion at 138 pounds. The senior standout received one forfeit and pinned his other three opponents to claim first place and move to 13-0 for the season.

Cole Nelson was third at 106 after a 2-1 outing that included a pin and a major decision, with Riece Graham 2-1 and fifth at 113 with a decision and a pin.

Jacob Nelson (132) and Wilber Ramirez (145) both placed fifth after each finished with 2-2 marks. Nelson had a win by pin and a win by decision, with both wins for Ramirez coming via pinfall.

Justin Stammer was 2-2 at 152 with a forfeit and a decision, with Erick Funez 2-2 at 160 with a pin and a decision while Cole Snyder was 1-2 at 182 with a decision. None were able to earn a placing in their respective division.

Perry will return to action Thursday with a visit to Carroll, with the team to participate in the Waukee Duals Saturday.
