Perry wrestlers hit mats at RRC tourney

Cole Nelson places first and Riece Graham second while Jacob Nelson wins 100th career match.

Perry sophomore Cole Nelson, ranked sixth at 113 pounds, won his bracket at Saturday's district tourney to earn a repeat trip to the State Wrestling Tournament.

WINTERSET — Perry finished with one champion, one runner-up and a trio of third-place finishers at Saturday’s Raccoon River Conference wrestling tourney.

Third-ranked host Winterset won the team title with 205.5 points. Bondurant-Farrar was second at 187 and Ballard third at 184.5. Carlisle (148.5) was fourth, and Carroll (117) fifth, with Perry tying ADM for sixth at 110 points, with Boone completing the field at 75.

Cole Nelson (31-6) avenged an earlier loss to fourth-ranked Rylie Anderson (29-4) of B-F with a 4-3 decision to win the RRC title at 113 pounds. Nelson, ranked eighth, had won by pin, in two minutes, to reach the final, where he avenged a 3-2 loss to Anderson Jan. 9.

Riece Graham (22-4) won by pin to reach the finals at 106, but there he lost by fall to sixth-rated Chase Fiser (38-2) of B-F to finish in second place.

Jacob Nelson (35-7) was 3-1 and placed third at 145. He won by pin, by 12-1 major decision and 4-1 decision. The final victory, over Alex Bangs of Ballard, was the 100th career victory for the Bluejay senior.

Erick Funez (28-14) was 3-1 and third at 138 with all three wins by pin while Cole Snyder (20-16) was 3-1 and third at 182 with two pins and a 9-4 decision.

Perry earned points for fourth place at 126 when Tanner Burgin (13-20) finished 1-2, winning by injury default. The Jays were also fifth, at 170, when Wilber Ramirez (21-17) posted a 2-2 mark with a 13-5 major decision and a pin.

Byron Melendrez (1-12 at 160) and Zach Darr (5-27 at 220) were both 0-2 and failed to place. Perry left the 120, 132, 152, 195 and 285 brackets open.

Perry will join Ballard, North Polk, Roland-Story, and Woodward-Granger for the 2A Section 5 tourney Saturday in Gilbert. Winners and runner-up finishers in each weight class will advance to the Feb. 15 District meet at Ballard. They will face those advancing from the Union-LaPorte City Sectional, which will also include BCLUW, Nevada, South Tama County, East Marshall and West Marshall.

Perry senior Jacob Nelson (145 pounds) won his 100th career match while placing third at the RRC tourney Saturday.
