Perry wrestlers make long trip to Parkersburg invite

PARKERSBURG — It was an early call for the Perry wrestlers Saturday, as the Bluejay grapplers left town at 5:45 a.m. for the long trek to the Keith Vry Invitational.

Several strong teams were in contention, with Don Bosco winning the event going away with 308.5 points. Crestwood was second at 207.5 and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows third at 163.5 while Perry scored 83.5 points to place sixth in the 12-school field.

A total of 11 Bluejays were in action, with three Jayette wrestlers taking to the mats in their own competition.

Taylor Atwell was 1-2 with a pin to place third in her bracket, with Martha Turrado 1-2 wiht a win via injury default. Hailey Peterson was also in action, but was denied a win in each of her two matches.

Riece Graham (1-6 pounds) and Cole Nelson (113) are ranked eighth and ninth, respectively, in their weight in 2A. Graham finished 1-1 and in second place after suffering a major decision (12-0) loss to 1A No. 8 Jaiden Moore of Don Bosco, with Nelson 1-1 after being defeated by fall, in 2 minutes, 36 seconds, by top-rated Carter Fousek of Crestwood. Graham’s win came by technical fall, with Nelson winning by major decision.

Jacob Nelson, ranked ninth at 145, placed fourth for Perry after a 2-2 mark. He won twice by pin, with one loss (a 9-3 decision) coming to seventh-rated Reed Abbas of C-G-D.

Tanner Burgin was 1-2 and fourth at 126 pounds for the Jays, with Cole Snyder 1-2 and fourth at 182. Burgin’s victory came by decision, with Snyder’s victory coming by pin.

Also placing for Perry was 138-pounder Erick Funez, who finished 1-3 with a pin. Funez was sixth in his bracket.

Alex Fickbohm (132), Charley Guardado (152), Wilber Ramirez (160), Zach Darr (220) and Logan Brokaw (285) also competed for Perry, but all finished with two losses before being able to collect a victory.

The Bluejays left the 120, 170 and 195-pound classes open.

Perry will host Carroll and Fort Dodge St. Edmond Thursday before completing the first portion of their season Saturday at the Waukee Duals.
