Perry senior Erick Funez nears a victory earlier this season.

The first home action of the season went well for the Perry wrestlers, as the Bluejays claimed wins in both of their matches Tuesday.

Perry held on to escape with a 40-38 win over Woodward-Granger, then scored a 59-22 win over Ogden. The triangular had begun with W-G posting a 66-18 win over Ogden.

Perry junior Riece Graham, ranked eighth, opened the duel with W-G at 106 pounds by recording a pin. Ninth-rated 113-pounder Cole Nelson won by pin, as did Anthony Chavez at 120 and Tanner Burgin at 126, the falls coming in 4 minutes, 20 seconds, 1:34, 3:10 and 3:43, respectively, and giving the Bluejays a quick 24-0 lead.

Pins from Erick Funez at 138 and Jacob Nelson at 145, in 1:11 and 2:32, came after a loss by fall at 132 and had Perry in front, 36-6.

Charley Guardado dropped a technical fall at 152 and Wilber Ramirez won a major decision, 13-0, at 160 in a pair of key matches. Guardado surrendering five points instead of six by fighting off a pin and Ramirez winning with four points instead of three proved crucial down the line for Perry.

W-G claimed wins by pin fall at 170 and 182, with Perry leaving 195 open and W-G state champion Cody Fisher winning by pin, in 24 seconds, at 220 as the advantage for the hosts shrank from 40-11 to 40-35.

Sophomore heavyweights Camden Jones of Perry and Alex Evans of W-G met to settle the outcome, with the Hawk grappler needing a pin for his team to claim the victory. Evans very nearly pulled the feat, closing in on a fall twice in the final 40 seconds, only to have Jones stay alive, with Evans winning 2-1, a result which created the 40-38 final.

Graham won by pin in 51 seconds against Ogden, with Cole Nelson winning an 18-2 tech fall in 4:33 and Burgin, Funez and Alex Fickbohm (132) all winning by forfeit.

Guardado won by fall in 1:26, with Cole Snyder a winner, in 2:35, with a pin at 182. Ramirez and Amos Barrios-Munoz (170) both won by forfeit, with Perry leaving 195 and 285 open against the Bulldogs.

Zach Darr (220) was also in action for the hosts, but was unable to come up with a victory in his two matches.

The Perry junior varsity will visit Saydel Friday, with the varsity traveling Saturday to the Parkersburg Invitational.
