Perry wrestlers win two of three on home mats

Perry honored their senior wrestlers and cheerleaders Tuesday during a quadrangular that included Ogden, Nevada and South Hamilton.

Perry defeated Nevada, 63-18, and South Hamilton, 57-22, but dropped a 51-30 dual against Ogden, who went on to defeat Nevada, 53-24, and South Hamilton, 54-29. Nevada was a 47-36 winner over South Hamilton in the other dual.

Cole Nelson recorded a trio of pins to finish 3-0 at 138 pounds, with Alan Gomez using a pin and 6-0 decision to win twice at 285 while Carlos Sandoval received a forfeit in his one match at heavyweight.

Kevin Colin (220 pounds) was 3-0 with two pins and a forfeit, with Taylor Atwell (113) 2-1 with a pin and a forfeit while Gavin Kerchival (120) was 2-1 with two forfeits.

Alex Fickbohm posted a 2-1 mark at 132 with two wins by fall, with Tanner Burgin (145) 2-1 with a pin and a forfeit while Daniel Cornelio was 1-1 at 152 with a pin.

Jovani Ortiz lost two matches at 160 but claimed a forfeit at 152, with Jose Chavez 2-0 with one forfeit at 160 and one at 170. Kain Killmer wrestled twice at 170, winning a 9-2 decision and dropping the other match while also scoring a pin, in 1 minute, 55 seconds at 182 pounds.

Brian Hernandez received a forfeit at 182, with Samuel Hernandez winning one of three matches at 195, doing so by pin.

Cristobal Turrado won a match by forfeit while dropping two others at 126, with Hailey Peterson, Aidan Carlson and Mercedes Ponce all coming up shy of a win in one match apiece at 106 pounds.

Perry grapplers competed in a total of seven unscored matches. Brian Hernandez, Martha Turrado and Julie Maylum each won by fall, with Isaac Ballard, Reese Baxter, Amy Aguirre-Eugenio and Jonathan Chavez also hitting the mat for the hosts.

The Bluejay matmen will travel to Nevada Friday for their first appearance in the HOIAC tournament, with the Jayette matwomen taking part in the girls state tournament both Friday and Saturday in Iowa City.
