Perry’s Puente named to Class 3A All-Substate 2 squad

Perry's Janier Puente muscles up a shot between a pair of Ballard defenders Jan. 6. Puente's 91 offensive rebounds were third-best in Class 3A.

Perry’s Janier Puente had his prep basketball season end over three weeks ago, but on Friday the 6-5 post earned a final postseason honor.

Puente was named by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association to the Class 3A All-Substate 2 team Friday in recognition for his play in Perry’s two regional contests. Perry topped Gilbert, 76-67, in their playoff opener before falling, 64-60, to host Boone in the regional final.

The burly Bluejay finished a combing 20-of-26 from the floor en route to 42 combined points. He had 24 total rebounds, nine of which came off the offensive glass.

Puente scored 406 points (18.5 points per game) in his final season while pulling down 235 rebounds (fifth best in 3A), an average of 10.7 rebounds per game (tied for 4th best in 3A). His 91 offensive caroms were third-best in 3A.

He has declared his intention to continue his athletic career by joining teammate Kyle Nevitt in joining the DMACC baseball program.
