Peter Charles “Pete” Johnson, 72, of Rippey passed away unexpectedly on Nov. 3, 2024, at the Dallas County Hospital in Perry, Iowa.
Pete was a cherished husband, father, brother and friend to many, and his kindness and dedication to his community left a lasting impact on those around him.
Pete’s funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, with his visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Rippey. Following the service, interment will take place at Rippey Cemetery in rural Rippey, Iowa.
Pete was born Sept. 12, 1952, in Grayling, Michigan, to Russell and Leone (Jorgenson) Owen.
Growing up in Grayling, he graduated from Grayling High School in 1971 and went on to begin a career in oil drilling. This work eventually led him to Iowa, where he found a new community and career path.
Pete worked for Cargill and later helped a local farmer before establishing himself as an independent truck owner and operator, known for his hard work and resilience.
On April 12, 1975, Pete married Kathlene “Kate” Brubaker at the United Methodist Church in Rippey. Together, they raised a son, Shawn, who was a central joy in Pete’s life.
Pete was known for his love of daily walks, which he took two to three times a day. His presence was a familiar and friendly part of the Rippey community.
He served more than 50 years with the Rippey Fire Department, dedicating himself as a firefighter and licensed EMT. His service exemplified his caring nature, and he was deeply committed to helping others in times of need.
He had a deep love for returning to Michigan, where he enjoyed reconnecting with family and old friends, especially his classmates.
Other simple joys included ice cream, conversing with people, cheering on University of Michigan football and spending time with his beloved family dogs.
Above all, Pete cherished his family more than anything.
He is survived by his loving wife, Kathlene “Kate” Johnson of Rippey; son, Shawn (Chelsea) Johnson of Adair; brothers, William “Bill” (Lori) Johnson of Frederic, Michigan, and Michael “Mike” (Chris) Johnson Sr. of Grayling; sister, Sharon Johnson of Homosassa, Florida; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepdad, Russell Owen; brothers, Harry, Tom and Bob Johnson; and sister, Anna Bellingar.
Pete’s kindness, community spirit and dedication to family will be remembered and missed deeply by all who knew him.
