The Dallas Country Area Retired School Personnel Association welcomed Perry High School art teacher Savannah Bruce and five of her creative students to the May 1 meeting of DCARSPA.
Bruce first displayed some samples of her own work, which she said was “inspired by her mother’s garden.” The vibrant flowers were recreated from photographs she had taken of flowers in the garden.
Four of the students who followed her were seniors in the program, with one junior rounding out the show. Most were enrolled in AP art at Perry High School. As the students shared their artwork they talked about the inspiration behind each picture
PHS junior Catherine Miranda shared an acrylic painting of — as well as a charcoal and chalk picture of an angel that she said represented “Hope.”
PHS senior Ashley Robles displayed several of her AP Art projects including a painting of roses that she felt symbolized” Love”.
Valentina Mion used her senior year as the theme for the artwork she shared. She displayed a still life of her track experience in acrylic and watercolor as well as a colored pencil drawing of a friend and herself walking away from Perry High School Lastly she depicted graduation with a picture showing her as a senior hand in hand with her as a child leading her present self into to the future.
PHS senior Jeanette Willett demonstrated her love for animals with an amazing charcoal picture of a Beta fish and a whimsical acrylic of a spoonbill contemplating a bowl of soup floating down the river.
PHS senior Collin Lyddon likes to work with charcoal using a technique called Chiaroscuro. His picture of a crow’s skull with roses was his first time using color. He also shared a picture of his six-month-old dog in charcoal.
Each student also shared her or his plans for the future and how they hope art will play a role in it, including careers in law, graphic arts, product design and animal study.
