Few events display Perry High School students’ spirit and sense of community quite like the annual Volunteer Day, always held on the Wednesday of Spirit Week during Homecoming.

Now in its 13th year, Volunteer Day sees about 500 PHS students donating their time and energy Wednesday to a wide variety of projects in and around the community. Students picked up trash, washed windows, visited assisted living and long-term care facilities, were involved in pet care and pet washing, aided in grounds keeping and performed several duties at the various school buildings among many other things.

Volunteering begins at 8:30 a.m. and lasts until 11 a.m. The Homecoming Parade will start at 6 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a cook out fundraiser at the high school, sponsored by the PHS Junior Class and the Perry Fareway.

At 8 p.m. Wednesday the community will be welcome at the PHS gym for a pep rally and the coronation of the new Homecoming King and Queen, where Valeria Gomez and Kain Killmer, the Class of 2023 royalty, are expected to be in attendance to crown their successors.

Perry will host the Storm Lake Tornadoes in varsity football action on Dewey Field at 7 p.m. Friday.
