MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — The Perry High school swim team took 20th place out of a field of 40 schools at the 2024 State Swimming competition here over the weekend.

Swimming is all one class, so Perry competed against all sizes of teams, including teams with divers.

In Friday’s preliminary events, PHS swimmers Aleah Karolus, a sophomore, and Quin Mahler-Moreno, a senior, each represented Perry in two events, the maximum number allowed per swimmer.

Karolus took 13th place in the 50 Freestyle, with a time of 24.88, and 16th in the 100 Freestyle, with a time of 54.55, advancing to the consolation finals on Saturday.

Mahler-Moreno took fourth place in the 500 Freestyle, setting a new school record with a time of 5:04.95, and she captured fifth place in the 100 Breaststroke, setting a second new school record with a time of 1:04.55.

Both performances qualified Mahler-Moreno for advancement to finals on Saturday, where the PHS swimmers continued their strong showing.

In the 200 Medley Relay, the PHS team of Harper Peterson, Mahler-Moreno, Cali Hernandez and Karolus took 23rd place among the 32 teams with a time of 1:57.32, dropping -0.77

Karolus took 16th place in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 55.40, earning 1 point for Perry.

Mahler-Moreno earned a trip to the podium with a third-place finish in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5:04.04, breaking the new school record that she set the day before by-0.91 seconds. Her performance scored 16 points for Perry High School.

Mahler-Moreno made a second trip to the podium for her fourth place finish in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:04.58, earning an additional 15 points for PHS.

The 400 Freestyle Relay team of Karolus, Cali Hernandez, Ellie Hughes and Mahler-Moreno took 29th place with a time of 3:53.08, cutting -1.99 seconds from their previous season best set last weekend at the regional contests in Johnston.
