We’ve already experienced Iowa’s constantly changing spring weather, and there’s sure to be more in the coming months. Now is a good time to prepare for severe weather so you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

First, stay weather-aware by signing up for notifications from weather apps or the Smart911 app. Text DALLAS to 672-83 for Dallas County text alerts. Get in the habit of checking the weather forecast before traveling even short distances, and stay home if possible during strong storms.

Next, make a plan for where you will shelter during strong storms or tornadoes. The safest place in your home is the interior of your basement or a small interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows or exterior walls.

Sirens will sound during tornado warnings, a spotted tornado or severe thunderstorms with winds of 70 mph or greater. Sirens may sound multiple times, so it’s best to stay sheltered and check the news or radio to know when it’s safe to leave.

Keep an emergency kit in your shelter location as well as in your vehicle. Be prepared for losing power or access to clean running water. Consider including items, such as gallons of water, nonperishable food, a first-aid kit, batteries and a flashlight, and visit ready.iowa.gov for more ideas.

Finally, check your home and auto insurance in order to know which damages are and are not covered. Take an inventory of your home with pictures or on paper, and keep it with you in case you need to report damages.
