The quick use of a fire extinguisher by an officer of the Perry Police Department prevented the spread of fire in an apartment on east Willis Avenue early Sunday.

Their were no injuries in the blaze at 2811 Warford St., which started about 1:15 a.m.

Perry Police Department Officer Hayley McCarthy was the first public safety agent on the scene, and she evacuated the building before setting to work dousing the fire.

The hallways of the apartment house appeared to be filled with dense smoke, but the fire damage was confined to a unit on the east side of the structure.

The Perry Volunteer Fire Department responded and cleared the dwelling of smoke by means of exhaust fans.

The cause of the fire is under investigation at this hour.

The 45-year-old apartment house is owned by CJO2 LLC of Arcadia, Iowa, according to Dallas County records.
