This Thanksgiving, people all across the country will be gathering with loved ones to share quality time and special meals.
When it comes to food during the holidays, sometimes people have an all-or-nothing attitude: they either overdo it and end up feeling sick from overeating, or they stick to a rigid diet without enjoying themselves at all.
Many will find that somewhere in the middle is when they feel the healthiest — both physically and mentally. You can enjoy the foods you might only eat once a year while making healthier choices throughout the day. Follow these simple tips to feel your best this holiday season:
• Don’t skip breakfast. Even eating a simple breakfast can prevent overeating later in the day.
• Tweak your recipes. There are many small changes you can make to your favorite dishes to make them a little healthier. Try using more healthy fats like olive oil instead of butter. For creamy dishes, look for low-fat sour cream or cream cheese.
• Eat slowly. Try to savor every bite and take a break before going back for seconds. Your brain needs about 20 minutes to receive signals from your stomach that you’re full.
• Drink water. Be mindful to drink water throughout the day to stay hydrated especially if drinking alcohol, too. Water can help you to feel fuller and prevent overeating.
• Get moving. Add some physical activity to the day, whether that’s playing with the kids outside, running a Turkey Trot or taking a walk after mealtime to help your food digest.
At the end of the day, remember what you’re celebrating, and focus on that experience with loved ones rather than fixating on what you’re eating.
